How to prepare for the IELTS Reading exam

The IELTS Reading exam lasts for 60 minutes and consists of three parts and a total of 40
questions, each worth one point, which become progressively more difficult. The best way to
prepare is to know what is involved and how you will be evaluated, then to come up with a
strategy for success.
The General Module features readings pertaining to daily life including ‘how to’ articles,
advertisements and things to do and see, whereas the Academic Module features texts on
history, nature and scientific research.
I recommend looking at the sample practice tests on the British Council’s website:

training

academic
These will give you a general idea of the style and format of the test.
You will be required to provide short answers, complete sentences, match information, select
from multiple choices answers, as well as identify points of view and other information.
You should devise a weekly plan to work on your reading skills. Time should be spent on
reading articles from a variety of publications such as magazines, journals and other sources
focusing on practice skimming and scanning articles to locate following:

  • Specific information such as dates, times, prices, etc.
  • Main idea
  • Purpose
  • Key points
  • Author’s viewpoint
  • Key points
  • Quotes
